Deriatra Artwork by Kevin Catalan

Deriatras

“She took a turn about the cabin, looking at the wide variety of objects displayed throughout. Periapts and amulets made of bone hung about the room, crafted from the remains of silver-wolves and deriatras…”

-excerpt from "The Ghosts of Epeithia"

  • Habitat: Wooded highlands and river bluffs
  • Known For: Bone and teeth worked into periapts, amulets, and ritual foci

Reptilian hunters about the size of a coyote, with scales, long legs, and a tapering muzzle full of serrated teeth. Their bones are prized for protective charms. In life they are trailed, in turn, by poachers, scholars, and anyone who needs a problem removed from a ridgeline. On the hunt they chitter and click with eagerness, a sound that carries through brush and makes prey misjudge how close they are.

Appearance

A deriatra is low, wide-chested, and roughly coyote-scale: banded, earth-toned hide like weathered rock and leaf-shadow, a stiff tail for balance, and a pair of long sickle-clawed feet that leave distinctive tracks. They run with a forward lean, head steady, muzzle parted. When the hunt is on, their throats and palates rattle in rapid chitters and hard clicks, not unlike insects or pebbles in a can... until the bite.
