Focuses Artwork by Miranda Morales

Focuses

The assumption that magickal focuses somehow generate power is something of a misnomer. A focus is no more a source of power than a funnel is a source of water. A funnel is the appropriate thing to keep in mind, as a focus directs what’s already flowing through you from your divine patron.

Without a funnel the water still flows, it just goes everywhere. For more on this see Wild Magick.

Types of Focuses

  • Amulets and Pendants: The first choice of those who need free hands, or prefer disguising their magickal capabilities.
  • Orbs and Crystals: The preference of diviners worldwide
  • Staffs: The choice for sustained and exhausting workings.
  • Wands: The favored focus of duelists and travelers

The above is hardly a complete list. I've seen spellweavers use everything from musical instruments to cooking implements. A battlefield healer I met near Cliadell used a seemingly ordinary bronze bell as his focus. When rung, it amplified his healing magick to a remarkable radius.

Note to travellers: When using a focus appropriate to your casting, you may add one additional die to your Power rolls.

While wands and other focuses can be purchased, they’re often crafted with specific patrons in mind. Below I've compiled common material correspondences based on observation and probably reliable hearsay:
