Lakrenyks

Raccoon Folk

My most treasured belongings disappeared mysteriously during my first night in a Lakrenyk settlement. When I confronted my hosts, they produced each item with ceremony, explaining they’d merely “blessed” them through temporary ownership. These masked, clever folk (crafted by Denēlia herself) stand slightly shorter than Ārdans, with dexterous hands and an uncanny gift for finding (others might say appropriating) interesting objects.

Their settlements feature elaborate treehouse networks connected by rope bridges and pulley systems. Lakrenyk society as a whole revolves around the concept of “valuable borrowing,” (objects gain spiritual significance by changing hands repeatedly) as in, objects gain spiritual significance by changing hands repeatedly. Ownership is seen as temporary guardianship rather than permanent possession, a philosophy that has led to countless cross-cultural misunderstandings. Living 50-70 years, Lakrenyks maintain uneasy trading partnerships with Galyntrans who appreciate their acquisitive nature, mutual respect with Shelduryks who share their love of interesting objects, and friendly rivalry with Felisyks over who possesses superior climbing abilities.
